Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla in an MU status

She’s only 16 and he’s 17.  And Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla know they’re too young to be seriously in love – yet, but old enough to feel mutual attraction coursing through their veins as some sort of electricity that draws them towards each other.

Daniel simply calls it “MU” (mutual attraction).  Kathryn echoes this and offers more: “Nagkakaintindihan kami. Alam namin ang priorities namin. Kailangan naming pag-ipunan ang future. Tumatanda din tayo.”

Yes, the chemistry is there, but they know their limits. And youth is on top of this list of things to think about.

The  “Must Be … Love”  lead stars do simple things teens with eyes only for each other normally do.  Last Valentine’s Day, for instance, Kathryn and Daniel went theater hopping and enjoyed a movie marathon.

“Siyempre, nakapuntos ako,” Daniel’s eyes gleam triumphantly.

Kathryn admits that’s their version of dating, aside of course, from having a quiet dinner together.

Two years ago on Valentine’s day, Daniel surprised Kathryn with all the roses her heart desires. Kathryn, on the other hand, brought home a collector’s item of a t-shirt for Daniel when she got home from the US.

Daniel admits he never felt so valued.

Add to that the shoe rack Kathryn gave him more recently, and Daniel knows how much his leading lady feels for him.

Actions do speak louder than words.  Daniel would casually drape an arm over the back of Kathryn’s chair at the presscon of their Star Cinema project.
Kathryn rewarded Daniel with a winning smile and lingering looks straight in the eye. Turns out they’re just carrying over their actions on the set.

Their co-star Janus del Prado observes, “Para silang may sariling mundo. Kinikilig ako!”

Daniel and Kathryn know why they’re so fond of each other.

Kathryn credits it to Daniel’s caring ways.

“Maalaga si DJ (Daniel’s nickname) sa shooting.  Mararamdaman mong special ka.  Hindi ka babastusin ng  ibang tao. At mabait siya kay Mama. Kaya stand out siya.”

Daniel is terse but as emphatic as ever.

“Simpleng simple si Kathryn.  At charming pa. Masaya akong kasama siya,” he says.

Daniel swears he does not have the playboy ways the men in his family are notorious for.

“Na kay Kathryn lang ang mga mata ko,” Daniel points out.

Kathryn is not losing sleep over the Padillas’ ladies’ man reputation at all.

“Hindi ko siya pinipigilang manligaw sa iba,” she says. “Very comfortable kami sa isa’t  isa. Nasasabi ko lahat sa kanya ang problems ko.  I ask for his advice. Nade-develop ang feelings (ko) habang tumatagal kaming magkasama kasi mabuting lalaki si DJ.”

Thus, Kathryn admits she’ll feel sad if Daniel is paired off with another girl.

When that day comes, she’ll just console herself with the thought that they will always find time to reach out to each other.

“Hindi mawawala ang communication sa amin.  Trabaho lang yon.”

It’s this faith in their “MU” relationship that keeps the Kathniel team-up going, and the fans hanging to every sweet word they say.

“Must Be … Love” opens in cinemas nationwide on Wednesday, March 13.
